Update: Seamless transition thanks to DHCOM family concept

Update: Seamless transition thanks to DHCOM family concept

Date : 3. November 2025

Our case study with NETZSCH Gerätebau GmbH has been updated – and now shows even more clearly how a planned platform change can be successfully implemented in practice.

From DHCOM i.MX6 Quad to DHCOM i.MX8M Plus Quad: Significant performance increase without hardware redesign

As part of the further development of its thermal analysis devices, NETZSCH initially relied on the proven DHCOM i.MX6 Quad, as the more powerful DHCOM i.MX8M Plus Quad was not yet available at the time of series production. However, the subsequent changeover was planned from the outset – and could be implemented particularly efficiently thanks to the DHCOM family concept.

Compatibility that pays off: The standardized SODIMM-200 interface proved to be a key element in this process: Thanks to complete pin and form factor compatibility, the existing carrier board could continue to be used without the need for costly redesign.

In concrete terms, this means:

  • No new certifications
  • No adaptation of the carrier board
  • Lower development costs
  • Shorter time-to-market
  • Cost savings in hardware and validation

Proven thermal management: The strength of a well-thought-out design was also evident in the cooling system: NETZSCH was once again able to rely on our established 5-Cent Cooling Solution. This enables stable operation even at elevated ambient temperatures – without the need for additional heat sinks or complex mounting systems.

Software ready for tomorrow: Thanks to our modular BSP architecture based on Mainline Linux and Yocto Layers, the software adaptations for the new CPU platform could be carried out efficiently – with a view to long term maintainability and CRA compliant update management.

An upgrade with vision

By switching to the DHCOM i.MX8M Plus Quad, NETZSCH now benefits from:

  • Significantly increased processor performance
  • Integrated NPU for running AI applications
  • Expanded multimedia functions for modern graphical user interfaces

And all this without compromising on robustness, long-term availability, and maintainability.
