FAQ – Answers to frequently asked questions about our Embedded Solutions

Date : 20. October 2025

  • How can I secure my embedded project in the long term?
  • What is the difference between various SOM technologies?
  • And why do we at DH electronics consistently rely on Mainline Linux?

These and many other questions were repeatedly asked at embedded world 2025 - not least during our interview with Jakob Bysewski from embedded data. This resulted in a compact FAQ that sums up our way of thinking, our understanding of technology, and our self-image as a development partner. Here we share our perspectives on topics such as modularity, long-term availability, security by design, and the correct handling of hardware and software architectures – for everyone who thinks about embedded systems not just in the short term, but in the long term.

What makes DH electronics special compared to other providers?

We offer customized embedded solutions that range from the initial idea to the finished product. We rely on our own System on Modules (SOMs), industry-proven components, and a comprehensive range of services: Certifications, lifecycle management, and long-term software support are always included.

What role does modularity play at DH electronics?

Our internal SOM family concept enables customers to continue developing their product over many years. Instead of a completely new development, a more powerful module can simply be used when performance requirements increase – without having to redesign the mainboard. This saves time and costs and ensures the future viability of the solution.

How does DH electronics simplify software changes within product families?

Our Yocto based board support packages (BSPs) are uniformly structured and maintained. This facilitates porting to new modules. Even if software adjustments remain necessary, our development philosophy minimizes the effort required by our customers.

How does your SOM technology differ from other solutions?

Our modules are specifically tailored to the entry-level ARM segment. Unlike some providers who cover very broad product portfolios, we focus specifically on this area—with a well-thought-out form factor, suitable interfaces, and optimally coordinated cooling.

How do you ensure long-term availability?

We pay attention to long-term availability when selecting components and qualify alternatives. Obsolescence management and close customer communication enable smooth transitions. Many of our customer projects have already been in successful use for 10, 15, or more years.

Why is Mainline Linux so important to you?

Mainline Linux is the basis for long-term maintainability and independence from SoC manufacturers. Through continuous maintenance of our BSPs and consistent upstreaming, we ensure that our systems can be updated - a key aspect for security and CRA compliance (Cyber Resilliance Act).

What is the most common mistake when selecting hardware?

Many companies focus exclusively on price and neglect the total cost of ownership. Comparing hardware alone is not enough. Software support, long-term availability, and security should also be taken into account.

How does DH electronics support security by design?

We start with risk assessments and scenario planning. Customers receive support for secure boot, key handling, update concepts, and much more. Mainline Linux allows us to achieve independence in patch management. Our security approaches are individualized and practical.

Which industries and applications do you support?

Our projects range from medical, laboratory, and measurement technology to eMobility, smart homes, and smart industry. The diversity of requirements makes our work exciting—no two projects are alike. What they all have in common is high demands on durability, safety, and reliability.

How does DH electronics approach new product developments?

We don't ask ourselves “What can we do?” but rather “What does the market need?”. Our development follows a pragmatic approach – with a clear focus on real needs instead of blindly reacting to every new SoC. This ensures clear product lines, sustainable support, and genuine market proximity.

What is your vision for the embedded industry?

In a family environment, we passionately develop innovative, sustainable solutions for the digital world of tomorrow - based on our embedded products and services.

One more personal question: What do you wish for the embedded industry?

More diversity! We would particularly like to encourage young women to get excited about technology and actively shape the electronics industry. Embedded is relevant for the future, exciting, and offers plenty of opportunities - for everyone.
